St. Bernardus Abt 12

Most beer nerds get a bit misty eyed and weak in the knees when you mention Westvleteren beer. It is arguably one of the best beers you can get, the trouble is it’s notoriously hard to find. Normally it can be purchased only at the gates of the monastery and only in very small quantities. Bad news for those of us not within easy driving distance of the St. Sixtus monastery.
Turns out though that Brouwerij St. Bernardus in Watou, Belgium has a close connection to St. Sixtus. From 1946 until 1992 St. Bernardus brewed under the St. Sixtus name. Apparently the recipes they use are similar to the ones Westvleteren still use.

After trying the Abt 12 I believe it. The look, smell, and taste are very similar to the Westvleteren 12. Tons of fruit and spice in both the nose and the taste. It’s rich, complex and smooth. Even though this is a 10% ABV beer, the alcohol is not overpowering. Even still it’s not one that will sneak up on you because you drank it to fast or had too many, it is so very rich. And best of all it’s easy to get here in Edmonton.

I would drink this again. Oh boy would I!

Brouwerij’t IJ IPA

Brouwerij’t IJ produces an IPA, and just like the rest of the beers they brew it is unfiltered and unpasteurized. Unlike the rest of their beers it isn’t listed on their site, and while it’s an homage to American punk-style IPA’s it certainly has more depth and balance than I’m used to seeing out of American microbreweries.

I notice the bitter edge of the  hops, but that bitterness is cleaner than most American IPAs I’ve had. It also comes across fairly dry, which isn’t a surprise from a European brewer.

But lets get down to business. This is a good beer, however the most notable thing about it is the packaging. Being a designer I appreciate good packaging, and I’m not the only one to have appreciated the work done by Redthumb. Sites like Lovely Package and even an old favorite of mine, The Die Line, have both featured it. My smartphone photography won’t compare their professional results, but here goes nothing.

I would drink this again, and I might even keep the bottle.

This might be getting old for some of you, but thanks to Scott for the beer and delivery. <3!

Lowenbrau Original

Lowenbrau Original

This was another beer from the bag of beer that my Uncle Jim gave me for Christmas. I have been wanting to try Lowenbrau for quite a while. Lowenbrau Original is a Munich Helles Lager brewed in Munich. I was surprised to find that Lowenbrau is one of many brands owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, this is a macro produced beer if there ever was one.

This beer poured pale golden in color with a head of foam that dissipated rather quickly. There really wasn’t much going on in this beer. Slightly malty, very little hops. This beer is fairly true to what I understand is the Munich Helles style. Would I drink it again? Sure, if it was put down in front of me. I wouldn’t go looking for it though.
